Plemons Residence
Shell Beach, California
The Plemons residence is a three story, 4,300
square foot home built on a
steep, ocean-facing lot.
Floor plan organization and architectural detailing
follow Craftsman traditions, about which the
owners are well informed and passionate.
The house is rotated on the site, in
part to direct
primary views to the
intersection
of land and sea.
It is
configured as a
bridge over the
driveway, to
minimize
the built/paved footprint and maximize
landscaping. Circulation through the plan moves
upward from more public to more private spaces.
Custom wood joinery, wrought ironwork, fixtures,
finishes, and details like stone selection for
exterior masonry involved extensive collaboration
between the architects, owners, interior designer,
materials suppliers, and craftsmen.
The Plemons residence received an
AIACCC
honor award, was selected by Frontgate
for their
Americas Finest Homes series, and has appeared
in several publications, including the book, Living With Arts & Crafts, by Ros Byam Shaw.
