LOS ADOBES DE MARIA
APARTMENTS, PHASE I

Santa Maria, California

The first phase of Los Adobes de Maria
is a 65 unit farmworker rental housing complex on a five acre urban site,
including a community building, day care facilities, and both active and passive site amenities. The development was funded by USDA and several grant programs, and received a national Maxwell Award of Excellence from Fannie Mae Foundation, an American Institute of Architects AIACCCC Honor Award, and a national Design Excellence Award from NAHRO.

Buildings are oriented toward pedestrian spaces internal to the site: two courtyards and a bench-lined paseo. Front elevations use varied parapet shapes and column colors to individualize the townhouse unit entries. The design of Los Adobes de
Maria has been referenced in
the development of similar farmworker projects around the country.
